Dumortierite is my new love! When you’re in love you have to know more about the subject of your attraction! Here is what I found.
This stone was named after a French paleontologist named Eugene Dumortier who discovered it. It is a vibrant and fibrous aluminum boro-silicate mineral. Due to its hardness and durability, this stone has been used for many purposes including industrial development, for surfaces such counter tops and tables, and as an ornamental stone for jewelry.
Dumortierite has beautiful fibrous elements and a glasslike luster that makes it perfect for cabochons and beads often used in jewelry making. The variety of colors that can be found on the mineral, varying from hues of brown and blue to a more uncommon shade of purple and pink, make the mineral very unique and interesting to work with.
Comparing Dumortierite With Other Stones
Dumortierite is commonly mistaken for sodalite and is also often used as an imitation of lapis due to the similar blue color they both possess. However, dumortierite is fairly rare and has several differences that distinguish it from other minerals and stones. Unlike dumortierite, sodalite has calcite dispersed throughout the stone and is much lighter in density. Lapis, on the other hand, differs from dumortierite in that it has a more vivid blue color while dumortierite has a darker shade of blue that can be compared to the color of denim and has gray or black shades within the mineral. Lapis also features a presence of pyrite, something that cannot be found in the crystals of dumortierite. Additionally, lapis is a softer stone with a hardness of about 5.5 as opposed to dumortierite’s 7 on the Mohs scale.
