New pair of earrings arrived at my gallery – Starfish earrings. Two long earrings had to look like starfish as per client request. Must be the statement earrings, I guessed!
What I knew I had to Do
I had a picture of cheap looking starfish earrings that were embroidered in one color and size of seed beads. I’ve seen something similar before. It never crossed my mind that I would repeat the same boring design. The earrings looked flat and had no pattern whatsoever. The only shape of the earrings resembled starfish.
I knew the size of the earrings. Those of you, who follow my blog for a long time, probably, know already, I love long earrings.
I also knew the colors I had to work with. The colors were approximate. I did not have any samples of clothes or printed materials to match. A couple of photographs sent by email looked like they were made under the regular yellow light, and therefore they did not show colors accurately.
I chose the beads, photographed them and sent the photo to my client for approval.

Creative Process
I had an idea of how the starfish looks like, but I needed a more unobstructed view of a pattern I am going to create. So I looked at different starfish images on Pinterest.
Then I drew a sketch of the future earnings, and I made sure they are actual size.
Considering that these earrings were slightly asymmetrical, I had to mirror the pairing earring images instead of just making two copies of one design.
Having an actual size drawing helped me estimate the size of separate starfish shapes. Making embroidered jewelry one always has to take into account the edge of the embroidery which might add to the actual size.
I embroidered each of four starfish separately and then connected the smaller starfish with the bigger one.
My goal was to keep the pattern of the embroidery similar, but I did not intend the pairs of starfish to be exact. After all, I was embroidering nature. Natural patterns do not repeat exactly all the time.
Each earring consisted of three parts. Therefore I made six separate parts total.
Connecting and edging all parts went as long the embroidery process itself.
I made the Starfish Jewelry Set and these earrings became part of it.
Do you like the final design? Would you wear these earrings?
P.S. All shells on the photo were collected by me on different coasts at different times, on different trips. I am glad, I found an artistic use for them, finally!
